This Week's Monstrosity: Summer Reading Assignments, A New Lois Lane, and More
What makes a perfect summer read? Discuss.
Updates
A review of Jennifer Lawrence’s new film No Hard Feelings in The Atlantic offered a crosslink to this gem, “What’s the Meaning of Mother!?” which is a true question of the age. I still think about this film idly sometimes, and it’s one of the most haunting things I’ve viewed.
TV-wise, I’ve been in a meandering, fluff mood ever since the finales for Succession and Barry, so I was surprised by how quickly I got sucked into the new season of Black Mirror (though the prominent feature of Annie Murphy in episode one didn’t hurt!). I’m only two episodes in but I’m already getting a theme of how we shape and are shaped by the screens we watch.
AI isn’t coming for our jobs; people who know how to use AI are.
In a move of utter perfection, a new upcoming Superman series has cast Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and I know her former role as fast-talking, resourceful, whirlwind comedienne Mrs. Maisel is going to serve her well.
Back in school, summer meant freedom from homework and projects…with one caveat: summer reading assignments. The FANTASY+GIRLS Podcast is bringing it back with a series where co-host Emma C. Wells and I will be challenging each other with spectacular summer reads. Follow along! And while you’re there, tell us what makes a perfect summer read.
